Looking up Main Street, this 1865 view shows one of Richmond's central commercial thoroughfares in the months after Union forces took the former Confederate capital. David B. Woodbury made the image using the wet collodion process, which required coating and developing glass plates on the spot, so each negative was produced under demanding field conditions. Made as a stereograph, the picture was meant to be seen as a pair through a stereoscope, a popular parlor device that brought scenes of war-damaged cities into middle-class homes. Woodbury died in 1866, which gives the negative added weight as a record of the city in its immediate aftermath.
