Castle Thunder was a converted tobacco warehouse on Cary Street in Richmond, which the Confederate government used as a prison for Union soldiers, accused spies and civilians suspected of disloyalty. David B. Woodbury made this stereograph in 1865, as the war was ending and Richmond was passing into Union hands. The two plates were meant to be viewed together to create a sense of depth, and Woodbury's Richmond views record the city's wartime landmarks just after the fall of the Confederate capital.
