A former tobacco warehouse on Cary Street in Richmond, Castle Thunder was converted into a Confederate prison during the Civil War. It held Union soldiers, civilians accused of disloyalty, and suspected spies, and its harsh reputation made it one of the better-known detention sites in the Confederate capital. This 1865 stereograph negative was made by David B. Woodbury, who documented Richmond in the months around the city's fall to Union forces that spring. Pictures like this one give a rare view of a building that was known more through prisoners' accounts than through images.
