The burnt district of Richmond, Virginia, shows the damage from the fires of early April 1865, when the city was evacuated ahead of Union troops and large parts of its commercial core were destroyed. The stereograph was made as a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection. Views like this one recorded the ruins of the Confederate capital just after the war ended, when the city's scale of loss became a subject of public interest.
