Looking east from the Canal basin, this stereograph records the blackened ruins of Richmond's burned district, the commercial area near the James River waterfront. Fires broke out on April 2 and 3, 1865, as Confederate forces evacuated the city and Union troops moved in, and the blaze spread through blocks of warehouses and businesses. The stereo format was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave Northern viewers a three-dimensional sense of the destruction. The image is one of many photographs of the ruined city made in the months after the Confederate capital fell.
