Two women in black walk through the ruined streets in this 1865 albumen print, a detail that gives the scene its human focus amid the wreckage. The photograph shows the burnt district of Richmond, Virginia, after fires set as Confederate forces evacuated the city in early April 1865 destroyed much of its commercial core. The image was made from a glass negative and is part of the Library of Congress Civil War photograph collection. It was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, and it has been widely reproduced as a record of the war's damage to Southern cities.
