Taken in Richmond, Virginia, in 1865, this stereograph shows a group of Black residents, described in the original title as freedmen, gathered beside a canal. Union forces took the city in early April 1865, and in the weeks that followed, photographers such as David B. Woodbury recorded the damaged capital and the people moving through it as slavery ended. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a fragile format of the period, and belongs to the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection. The caption does not say what brought the group to the canal, but the picture offers a rare view of everyday life along Richmond's waterfront at the close of the war.
