Taken in 1865, this view shows the canal at Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital, which Union forces occupied in April of that year after the city was largely evacuated and partly burned. The James River and Kanawha Canal ran along the James River through the city, and its locks, mills, and warehouses were central to Richmond's industry before the war. The negative is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose, and develop plates on the spot. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made it as part of the wartime photographic record of the South, and it is a useful document of the city's condition just after the war ended.
