The Tredegar Iron Works, on the James River below downtown Richmond, was the Confederacy's most important source of cannon, rolled iron, and armor plate. This stereograph shows it in 1865, as the war was ending and the city had just been abandoned and occupied. David B. Woodbury made it as a pair of glass negatives, to be viewed through a stereoscope so the works appear to have depth. Views like this one let Northern audiences see up close the industry that had sustained the Southern war effort.
