A steamer named the Monohansett rides the water in this 1865 view of Richmond, Virginia, a city that had been the Confederate capital until Union troops occupied it in early April of that year. Photographers followed the army into the battered city to record its waterfront and wartime damage. This image survives as one half of a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass, made by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two plates merged into a single three-dimensional scene.
