This view of Richmond, Virginia, was made in 1865 as a glass stereograph negative, so it was meant to be printed as one of a pair that gave a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and his work from this period belongs to the Civil War glass negative collection at the Library of Congress. The city had been the Confederate capital until Union forces took it in April 1865, after fires had swept parts of the downtown in the days before the evacuation. Images like this one record the city in the months when Americans were eager to see the war's damage firsthand.
