Taken in April 1865, this stereograph shows the canal at Richmond, Virginia, in the days after Union forces occupied the Confederate capital when its government evacuated. It was made from two glass negatives, one for each eye, so the scene could be seen in depth through a stereoscope, a popular parlor viewer of the period. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died the following year, and his views of the city at the close of the war are among the early photographic records of Richmond's surrender. The canal was a working waterway, so the picture offers a glimpse of ordinary life continuing in the aftermath of the fighting.
