Belle Isle, a rocky island in the James River just below the falls at Richmond, is the subject here, recorded in a stereograph pair made in 1865. During the war the island held Union prisoners in a crowded Confederate camp, and the photograph dates from the months after Richmond fell that spring. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the two glass plates, which were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to give the scene depth.
