Belle Isle lies in the James River above the rapids that mark Richmond's fall line, and this view frames the rocky water and the bridges that reach the island. During the Civil War the island held Union prisoners, and by the early twentieth century it had become a public place for Richmonders to walk and picnic. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed towns and scenery across the country, made this view around 1908 on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, showing how the city presented its river landscape at the time.
