Few views of wartime Richmond look out over the Rocketts landing and the James River as this one does. Rocketts was the city's working waterfront, where steamers, barges and small craft loaded and unloaded the goods Richmond relied on while it served as the Confederate capital. The record dates the print to about 1864, when river traffic was vital to supplying the city under growing Union pressure. Its albumen process, common in the 1860s, preserves the fine detail of the crowded wharves and vessels.
