Designed by Thomas Jefferson with the help of French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, the Virginia State Capitol on Shockoe Hill was modeled on the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple in Nîmes, France. Construction ran from about 1785 to 1788, and the building became one of the earliest large Neoclassical public buildings in the United States. This engraving's caption card gives no date, so it cannot be tied to a specific campaign or edition, but engravings of this kind were often reproduced in books and periodicals, where the building's columned portico and classical proportions made it a favorite subject for artists and printmakers.
