The Virginia State Capitol, set on Shockoe Hill in Richmond, owes its form to Thomas Jefferson, who adapted the design from the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple in Nîmes, France, and had it built in the 1780s. This steel engraving renders the building from a drawing by W. Goodacre, Jr., and was printed by Fenner Sears & Co., a London firm that issued views like this for illustrated books and travel volumes. The record does not give a date, so the print's exact age is uncertain, but it shows how the neoclassical building was known to audiences beyond Virginia.
