This view places the Virginia State Library on the grounds of the Capitol in Richmond, the seat of state government since the late eighteenth century. The Capitol itself, designed with Thomas Jefferson's involvement and completed in 1788, stands at the center of Capitol Square, and the library's location there tied the state's government and its books together in one civic landscape. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1900 and 1920 to document American towns, parks and public buildings. Its dating is an estimate from the record.
