Thomas Jefferson drew on the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple in Nîmes, France, when he helped design Virginia's state capitol in Richmond during the 1780s. The result gave an American legislature a classical portico that was rare at the time. The building became a model for later statehouses and a lasting symbol of the young republic's ideals. This steel engraving, a technique favored for fine architectural views in 19th-century books and periodicals, reproduces the building in printed form, though the card gives no date.
