The main entrance hall of the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond shows the building's classical interior as it looked in the years between 1910 and 1920. Thomas Jefferson worked with the French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau on the design, which was completed in the late 1780s and drew on Roman temple forms, making the building one of the earliest neoclassical public buildings in America. This view was recorded by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format glass negatives documented American cities and landmarks for commercial sale in the early twentieth century. The negative's large 8 by 10 inch size gives the hall's architectural detail and spatial order a notable clarity.
