The ruins of the State Arsenal in Richmond, Virginia, are the focus of this 1865 view, taken in the weeks after Union forces occupied the Confederate capital in early April. As Confederate authorities abandoned the city, fires and explosions destroyed large areas of its military and industrial property. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the image on a wet collodion glass negative, a common method of the period. Pictures like this one offered viewers far from Virginia a direct look at the wreckage of the war's most symbolic city.
