The ruined Richmond and Petersburg Railroad bridge recorded here was part of the rail line that linked the Confederate capital with Petersburg, the city whose siege had held Richmond's defenses in place for months. The wreckage dates to 1865, when Richmond fell to Union forces in early April and the city was left damaged by the Confederate evacuation fires and the disruption of its transportation network. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the negative as a wet collodion glass stereograph, a format that let viewers see war damage in three dimensions.
