Few views in the gallery show the James River from this angle: a stone-and-timber railroad crossing reduced to ruins, seen from an island in the river. The Richmond and Petersburg Railroad linked the Confederate capital with the supply city of Petersburg, so its bridge was a strategic target. When Confederate forces abandoned Richmond in early April 1865, they burned bridges, warehouses and other structures to deny them to Union troops, and the fire spread through much of the city. David B. Woodbury, who worked in the Richmond and Petersburg area after the fall, recorded the aftermath on wet collodion glass negatives, which preserve the wreckage in fine detail.
