The picture shows the ruins of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad bridge at Richmond, Virginia, a rail link that carried supplies and troops between the Confederate capital and the siege lines at Petersburg. Confederate forces evacuated Richmond in early April 1865, and retreating troops destroyed many bridges and rail facilities as they left, so the wreckage records the collapse of the city's transport network near the end of the Civil War. The photograph is a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, who documented the aftermath of the fighting in Richmond that spring. Its stereograph format was designed to be viewed in pairs for a three-dimensional effect.
