Few pictures from Richmond in the spring of 1865 show the damage as plainly as this view of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad depot, where the wreckage includes destroyed locomotives. Confederate authorities and the army left the city in early April 1865, and fires set during the evacuation spread through warehouses and rail yards before Union troops arrived. David B. Woodbury made the image as a stereograph, a pair of slightly offset views meant to be seen together in a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Woodbury died in 1866, and his glass negatives are now held by the Library of Congress.
