The picture shows a paper mill reduced to bare walls near the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad depot in Richmond, Virginia. Confederate forces evacuated the city in early April 1865, and fires set during the withdrawal spread through the warehouse and industrial districts along the rail lines. This albumen print was made later that year from a glass negative, a process that allowed photographers to produce many copies of a single scene. Its broken walls and open sky offer a record of how the war's end reshaped the city's working areas.
