Few American cities were as scarred by the Civil War as Richmond, and this stereograph, issued in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1865, captures the ruins left after the Confederate capital fell. When Confederate forces evacuated in early April 1865, fires spread through the city, and much of the downtown business district was destroyed. Stereographs like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional scene, so parlor viewers could look over the wreckage from home.
