Photographed in Richmond in April 1865, this image shows Brevet Major General Charles Devens with his staff just after Union forces took the former Confederate capital. Devens, a Massachusetts lawyer who had served with the Union army, was in the city during the occupation, and the group portrait records the officers who worked alongside him. Mathew Brady, the photographer, had gone to Richmond that spring to document the ruined city and the army in it. Devens later served as United States attorney general under President Rutherford B. Hayes.
