Recorded simply as a general view of Richmond, Virginia, this 1865 negative shows the former Confederate capital weeks after Union troops entered the city in early April. Confederate authorities had evacuated Richmond on April 2, and fires set in the days before burned much of its commercial district, so photographs from that spring document a city in its aftermath. The image was made by James F. Gibson, who worked in Richmond that year, using the wet collodion process on a glass negative. That method required the plate to be coated, exposed and developed while still wet, which made field work in the city demanding.
