Few monuments in Richmond are as closely tied to the Lost Cause as the equestrian statue of Major General J.E.B. Stuart, the Confederate cavalry commander who was mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern, just north of the city, in 1864. The bronze figure stands on Monument Avenue, the boulevard of Confederate memorials that grew up in the decades after the Civil War. Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its broad catalog of American views, recorded the monument on this glass negative, made between roughly 1906 and 1910, a period when Richmond was actively building and dedicating its wartime memorials.
