Stuart's grave at Hollywood Cemetery, on a hillside overlooking the James River, is the particular subject here, shown with its temporary marker rather than the permanent monument added later. J. E. B. Stuart, the Confederate cavalry commander, was killed at Yellow Tavern near Richmond in May 1864, and he was buried in Hollywood, a burial ground that had become a gathering place for Confederate dead. E. & H. T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold stereographs widely during the war, issued this glass stereo view of the site in 1865, when the city was still reeling from the fall of the Confederacy.
