This stereograph shows the family of Maj. Gen. Edward O. C. Ord, with his wife and child, at the Richmond mansion that had been home to Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president. Taken in 1865, after Union forces occupied the city, the pair of glass negatives records a striking domestic scene in a building tied to the Confederate government. The caption also says a table in the doorway is the one on which Lee's surrender was signed, a claim worth weighing against the better-known account of the signing at Appomattox Court House that April. Photographer David B. Woodbury made the image, and it survives as part of the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
