The stereograph shows the Washington Monument in Capitol Square, the public green at the center of Richmond, Virginia, which was built to honor George Washington and completed in 1858. Photographed in 1865, it was taken in the months after Union forces occupied the Confederate capital in April, when the city was full of soldiers, visitors and damage from the fighting and the fires that swept the business district. The negative was made by David B. Woodbury, who documented the war and its aftermath with a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required the photographer to prepare and expose each plate on site.
