The statue at the center of this view is Jean-Antoine Houdon's marble likeness of George Washington, which stands inside the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond. Houdon worked from life at Mount Vernon in 1785, and the finished figure was placed in the building designed by Thomas Jefferson, making it one of the earliest public tributes to Washington. This glass negative, made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the chamber as it looked in the early twentieth century, when the company traveled the country documenting landmarks and scenic places.
