The bronze equestrian statue of Robert E. Lee stands at the center of Richmond's Monument Avenue, a boulevard lined with Confederate memorials. The statue was designed by the French sculptor Antonin Mercié and unveiled in 1890, and it became a focal point for Richmond's efforts to honor the Confederacy after the Civil War. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century. The image shows how the monument was presented to visitors in the years before the First World War, when photographic views of civic sites sold widely as souvenirs.
