A new car is the subject of this August 1938 view of South Richmond, Virginia. In the 1930s, few Black families in segregated Richmond could afford a new automobile, so the purchase stood as a visible sign of economic progress in a community that mainstream photography often ignored. The photograph is by Robert H. McNeill, a Black photographer working in Richmond, and it was reproduced in Valencia Hollins Coar's 1983 survey *A Century of Black Photographers, 1840-1960*, which helped bring such local work to a wider audience.
