Few pictures from the 1890s show African American men running the machinery of their own newspaper, and this view of the Planet's press room in Richmond, Virginia, makes that visible. The Planet was a Black-owned weekly that covered local and national news for Richmond's African American readers at a time when Jim Crow laws were tightening across the South. Black newspapers like it gave their communities a platform for political argument, church and social news, and criticism of segregation and lynching. The photograph was included in the Library of Congress's *American Treasures* exhibition in 2005 and 2006.
