At the T.B. Williams Tobacco Factory in Richmond, the work shown is box making, the packing that followed manufacturing and kept finished tobacco moving to market. Richmond was one of the largest tobacco manufacturing centers in the South during the 1890s, and its factories relied heavily on Black workers for labor that was often hard, repetitive and poorly paid. The record dates the picture only tentatively to about 1899, so it is best read as a glimpse of the city's industrial workforce at the close of the century.
