This drawing shows a house in Richmond, Virginia, rendered in perspective with the surrounding landscape, a format architects used to show clients how a finished building would look in its setting. It is part of the Benjamin Henry Latrobe Archive at the Library of Congress. Latrobe, a English-trained architect who settled in America in 1795, is often credited as the first professional architect in the United States, and his office produced careful presentation drawings like this one. Dated 1807 to 1808, the sheet reflects a period when Richmond was growing into the state capital and when American builders were adopting classical design. Its ink and graphite work shows how Latrobe combined technical accuracy with the atmosphere of the landscape.
