Richmond's Ballard House, a hotel on Franklin Street, is the particular subject here, photographed in 1865 while the Virginia capital was under Union control after the Confederate evacuation in early April. David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, made the wet collodion glass stereograph negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates before they dried. Views like this document a city in transition, with its streets and buildings recorded just after the war ended.
