A single house in Richmond, Virginia, is the subject here, shown as a stereograph taken from a glass negative made with the wet collodion process. The record dates it to 1865, the year Richmond fell to Union forces in April after serving as the capital of the Confederacy. Retreating troops set fire to military stores and the city's business district was largely destroyed in the fires that followed. Photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, was among those who recorded the city in the months after its fall, and views like this one give a sense of ordinary street life in a city under occupation.
