Few churches in Richmond carry as much early history as St. John's on Church Hill, where Patrick Henry is traditionally said to have delivered his 1775 call for resistance to Britain. This view, taken from the street in 1865, is one half of a stereograph pair, two side-by-side images that a stereoscope merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Photographer David B. Woodbury made it on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried. The date matters: Union forces took the Confederate capital that April, so the picture records a city newly under federal control.
