The First African Church on Broad Street appears here as one half of a stereograph pair, two side-by-side exposures that a viewer could fuse into a single image with depth. The views were issued by E. & H.T. Anthony, the New York firm that was among the best-known publishers of Civil War-era photographs. The picture dates to 1865, the year Union forces took Richmond and the Confederacy collapsed. Its wet collodion glass negative captures the church's brick facade and surroundings in the sharp detail that process made possible.
