Few buildings in Richmond carry a sadder origin than the Monumental Church, which stands on the site of the 1811 Richmond theater fire that killed dozens of people, including the governor of Virginia. Built after that disaster as a memorial, the church shows in this 1865 view the austere classical lines that made it a landmark on Broad Street. The picture was made as a glass stereograph, one of a pair meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, and it was issued by the E. & H.T. Anthony firm. It dates from the year Union forces took the Confederate capital, when the city's public buildings were a common subject for photographers documenting the war's end.
