Old St. John's Church stands on a hill in Richmond, Virginia, with its churchyard cemetery around it, and this view shows the building as it appeared in the early twentieth century. The small frame church is best known as the site of Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty, or give me death" speech in March 1775, when the Second Virginia Convention met there to debate resistance to British rule. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that made large numbers of views of American towns and landmarks, produced this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, which captures the church and its gravestones as they stood before the city grew up around them.
