St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Richmond's Grace Street is best known for its Civil War history. On Sunday, April 2, 1865, Jefferson Davis was in his pew during morning services when a messenger delivered a note saying Confederate lines around the city had broken, and the government had to leave. This view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold travel photographs of American towns and landmarks around 1900 to 1910. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the building's masonry and surroundings in fine detail, as it appeared a few decades after the war.
