Saint John's Church on Richmond's Church Hill is where Patrick Henry, in March 1775, urged Virginia's convention to prepare for armed resistance to Britain, ending with the words "Give me liberty, or give me death." Made sometime between 1861 and 1865, when Richmond had become the Confederate capital and the city was crowded with troops and officials, the albumen print shows the modest church at a moment of intense wartime activity. Photographers of the period often turned to old landmarks like this one, linking the city to an earlier struggle for independence.
