Few residences in Richmond carry as much legal history as the house pictured here, the home of John Marshall, the Virginian who led the U.S. Supreme Court as Chief Justice from 1801 until his death in 1835. Marshall's opinions, including *Marbury v. Madison*, shaped the court's power to review federal and state laws, and his Richmond home was where he lived for much of that career. This photograph was made around 1906, roughly seven decades after his death, so it records the house as it stood in the city's later years. It is worth noticing how the building's architecture and setting had changed by the early 1900s.
