St. John's Church on Richmond's Church Hill is where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me liberty, or give me death" speech to the Second Virginia Convention in March 1775, which gives this modest brick building an outsized place in American history. The church dates to the 1740s, and by the time this glass negative was made around 1920, it was already a landmark that drew visitors interested in the Revolutionary era. The National Photo Company produced many such views of American towns and sites in the early twentieth century, and this negative, a 1947 gift to the Library of Congress, shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as the glass coatings age.
