Aboard the U.S.S. Richmond, a crew gathers on deck for a religious service, with officers and enlisted sailors arranged in the open air. The image is a dry plate glass negative, 8 by 10 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many large-format views of American places and daily life in the 1890s and early 1900s. Sunday worship was a standard part of shipboard routine in the U.S. Navy, so the scene captures an ordinary ritual of naval life. The date is estimated from the company's 1901 catalog, which places the picture between 1890 and 1901.
